Use case

For the AI

Use it for a word a person may not know where it is used (Deposit at signing, Available, Cover, ABC class): in a summary, a column's header or a property's label. The screen keeps the word; the explanation is one hover away instead of a line of text under it (the house rule: a term explains itself on hover).

Use it when

  • A label or a header uses a word of the trade or of the tool
  • A number needs its definition, not its value

Use something else when

  • An icon-only button needs its name: Tooltip
  • The words must be read to do the task: Alert

Rules

  • The children are the word itself; tip is one or two short sentences.
  • Never put a Term on every cell of a column: the header carries it once.
  • Nothing a person must know lives only in the tip: touch screens show it on a tap.
